PROJECT TITLE : Urban Infrastructure Improvement Project

IMPLEMENTING AGENCY : Project Management Unit
& City Corporations, Thimphu and Phuntsholing

Project Objectives

  • improve the urban environment through appropriate urban infrastructure development
  • promote the development of effective and sustainable management of urban services
  • further human development through physical improvements
  • support economic growth through the development and management of sustainable and well planned infrastructure, and through provision of urban services.

Project Area and Outline

The Project sites are two principal cities of the country,

  • Thimphu with population of approximately 35,000 and an annual growth rate of between 7-10 percent
  • Phuentsholing with population of approximately of 25,000 and an annual grwoth rate of approximately 5 percent.

Both the cities have major strategic within the country, Thimphu being the national capital and the centre of government, and Phuentsholing being trading city on the Indian border with 90 percent all imports passing through it.
