Feasibility Study of possible site for New Township
Owing to the limited expansion scope and the flooding risk provided by the existing town the Royal Government of Bhutan instructed the Department of Urban Development and Housing to find a suitable site for the establishment of a permanent township for Bumthang in consultation with the Dzongkhag authorities and the representative of the local and business community. The new site for the township required the following conditions:
*Adequate scope for future expansion
*Proximity from dzong, which is the center of district administration
*Slope less than 30%
*Minimal danger from flooding
*Efficient provision of infrastructure

The business community, residents and the dzongkhag officials had unanimously selected the site at Dekiling for the establishment of their new township. Since a decade had already passed since the old plan was prepared and many new structures had sprung up since then, another urban development had to be prepared. A total of 13.2 acres had been earmarked for the new township and already owned by the government (see Fig 13). The first phase of the new township is designed within the 13.2 acres of land owned by the government.
