Bumthang dzongkhag is situated between Trongsa and Lhuentse dzongkhags. It borders Tibet to the north. The total area of of Bumthang dzongkhag is approximately 2714 kmē. The four valleys of Bumthang are glacial and therefore relatively wide and U-shaped. One of the country's major rivers, the Chamkhar Chhu passes through the dzongkhag. The central valley of the district is formed by the Chamkhar Chhu and contains the administrative center of Jakar. The elevation ranges from 2400m to 6000m above sea level. Bumthang remains cold for the major part of the year and so the summer is rather short. The climate is mainly temperate with an annual rainfall between 1000mm and 1500mm.
