The
continuing diversification of the economy from a predominantly agricultural
based subsistence farming and cattle rearing to a more lucrative tourism
industry have seen the construction of many lodges and guesthouses everywhere
in Bumthang. The absence of a comprehensive structure plan for the entire
valley has meant that pockets of ad-hoc development has started to emerge
within the valley. Most of these development is concentrated along the main
north-south road (Kurjey Road) from the existing town (see Fig. 11). In
some instances tourist lodges have been permitted to be constructed very
close to heritage sites and therefore seriously undermining the significance
and sanctity of the heritage site (see Fig. 12). New development has also
started to encroach on the fragile slopes of the valley as these area offer
panoramic vistas and is considered ideal locations for tourist lodges by
the local residents. |
