1.3 Decorative Elements

The Gyaltshen or 'Victory Banner' is the second highest architectural element placed on the roof of Dzongs and Monasteries. Historically, the Gyaltshen was permitted only in Monasteries that had 110 volumes of Kanjyur, 240 volumes of Tenjyur and other very sacred 'Kusung Thuk len". The Gyaltshen was also allowed if a structure had a Kemar band respective of roof feature. However, this Thopthang (entitlement) has been greatly misused as illustrated in the photo 1.3.2a.

The Gyaltshen is permissible only on Dzongs, Monastery, Royal Bulldmgs and Institutional Buildings.
