Technical Assistance

Post: Sewerage Specialist

Duration: 4-5 months in Bhutan

Background:

Danida is assisting the Urban Sector in Bhutan through the Environment & Urban Sector Programme Support. The Programme comprises of five components of which two components, Component 4 & 5 are related to Urban Development. Component 5 is “Support to Development and Management of District Towns”. The towns being supported under the Programme are Tsirang, Trashigang, Gyelposhing, Gelephu and Samtse. The development of the five towns in the combination of capacity building, technical support and development of infrastructure facilities. Among the many urban infrastructures to be provided in the towns, one of the major components is to put in proper place of wastewater collection and treatment system. In the largest of the five towns with a population of 12500, waste stabilization ponds and sewer network are being constructed. The remaining smaller towns with a population ranging from 2, 500 to 5,000, various treatment methods like package sewerage treatment plants to communal septic tanks and soak pits are being installed/built. Two towns remain where network design and sewerage treatment plant has not been carried out.

Qualifications:

• M.Sc/ME in public health/environmental engineering with civil engineering background.
• Extensive knowledge on design of low technology and low cost waste water treatment, hydraulic design of sewers, preparation of construction drawings.
• At least 5-10 years experience in planning, design and preparation of construction of sewer network, conventional sewerage treatment plants, lagoons and other low cost treatment methods for small urban centre.
• Fluency in verbal and written English.
• Good knowledge on the software design of sewers.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

• The Sewerage Specialist will visit the towns; identify appropriate sewerage treatment plant for the particular towns.
• Carryout detail design of the sewerage treatment plant including detailed drawings and technical specifications.
• Prepare layout of the sewer network for two towns (Damphu & Gyelposhing).
• Carryout design of sewers for two towns (Damphu & Gyelposhing).
• Prepare detailed drawings for the sewer network and technical specifications.
• Prepare detailed Design report for the network and the sewerage treatment plant.
• Prepare O&M report for the sewerage treatment plant and the sewerage network.
• Train local engineers on the design of sewers using the available software.
• Any other jobs related to design/review/up gradation of existing sewerage designs.
